The Lincoln Star Monday, March 15, 1976 East High Project May Bring In Gold By DICK HOLMAN Star Staff Writer Lincoln East High School will learn next month whether its innovative operational set-up will produce gold at the end of the rainbow. The array of colors, Community has been intensifying its sheen since summer 1972. when the new approach ot high school education began with help from Title III of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Now, $189,000 in federal grants later, the real pot of gold at the end of that rainbow may be found April 29-30: The last test could win East a federal validation as a model project available for any American school to adopt. Project co-coordinator Ken Rippe, who also teaches social studies, said outside evaluators will decide whether or not the Learning Community School has achieved the goaLs it set for itself three years ago.

Better Attitude Sought Rippe said, objective was that students, staff and parents should feel better or have a better attitude toward the educational program at East High. addition, the goal was that students should become more self-directed, and that students should improve their self-image. All of this should happen without any decrease in student Rippe noted that some of the achievement data, test scores for college-bound seniors, a slight since the innovative project began way of organizing a high consisting of six parts, he said: Cross- Roads Engineer Arthur Lobdell To Be Buried Services for Arthur T. Lobdell, engineer with the State Department of Roads for 48 years, will be at 1 30 Thursday at Roper Sons Mortuary. He died Sunday at the age of 81.

Lobdell began his career with the department in 1919 as a project engineer. He became chief of the Bureau of Roads and Bridges in 1927. and when that position was abolished in 1940, he was appointed an administration engineer He served as chief of personnel from 1951 until his retirement in 1965 Bom in Plattsburgh, Lobdell attended Cornell and was graduated in 1916 He was a veteran of both world wars and retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was a member of First United Presbyterian Church, American Legion, Lambda Chi Alpha, Reserve Officers Association, and Professional Engineers. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; a son, Willard R.

Lobdell of San Antonio, daughters, Jean L. Harrington and Mrs Robert (Elizabeth Ogden, both of Lincoln, a brother, George Lobdell of White Creek, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and 13 grandchildren Burial will be in Wyuka Cemetery departmental learning communities of staff members; curriculum options; an adviser- advisee program; shared decision-making by parents, students and staff for recommendations to the principal; community involvement through annual parent conferences, and continuous staff development. Federal Funds Used East used the federal funds for teacher training and developing curriculum, such as condensing long courses into quarter- or nine-week study periods to provide more options but with specific learning objectives. see this as a miracle cure-all," Rippe said. Nor will the Learning Community School remain static.

plan is certainly to continue but also to evaluate and continue making changes as needed to improve it. And though East undertook the project to benefit Lincoln students, part of the responsibility for developing it is to share successes with other schools, he said. To prepare for the validation exam, project director and Principal Jim Huge, speech teacher and co-coordinator Linda Hoff and Rippe are directing a paperwork persuasion to show the community school approach effectiveness. To Be Model Other schools interested in adopting all or any part of the model, if validated, can then look at the spending and strategy' breakdown and decide if that'll work for them. Evaluators are Ed Brainard, Colorado Education Department, Marvin Rosen, Rapid City, S.D., schools superintendent, and Larry Havlicek, Kansas University, Lawrence.

John (Jack) Bailiie, federal programs administrator for the Nebraska Education Department, said the evaluation is 1 for both the team and East High staff, when it's over, sure our projects are really helping If East's program is found educationally sound, Rippe said other schools will probably spend less to put the model into operation. The federal dollars were the bulwark of the initially high development costs in Lincoln And future costs to the Lincoln district, Rippe said, will be only a to staff and training to make the Learning Community School continue to work better.
