Our townsman, Robert W.

Ben nett, of Kilbonrn, Jenkins, it re turned Nst Wednesday from an ex tended tour into the interior. It ii his first visit of any great extent to the western counties, and ho seems to be enraptured with the beautiful and thriving country through which ho passod. Leaving Brownville, he went through Tecumseb, thence beyond Wolf River to Blue Spring on the Republican; thence to the Otoe village; thence to Brownville by the direct road. In every. locality coming under his notice wheat is very fine, and is being rapidly harvested.

All the small grains are better and more advanced than in the river tier of counties. Corn, however, though promising well, is scarcely equal to nearer the river. The present season seems to be uncommonly fruitful of storms through out the entire country. Uains and floods, with hail storms and lightning, tornadoes, have held high carnival thus far. The unusually b-ight prospects for the heaviest crops of all kinds in the States, have been in many places very seriously dampened by the copiousness of rains aud the abundance of bail storms.

Notwithstanding thi, the the harvests this seaon will in the aggregate considerably exceed that of any previous season in the histo-of the country. The sacrifice of hu man life by drowning, by lightning, and by accidents to trains running on railroad, underminod by floods has been immense, add the dispatch es now-a-day-B are burdened with tue details of calamities of this kind. It would 6eem that somo unusual agency is at work causing these pur-turbations in the usually well order, ed regulations of terrestral things. The mind naturally' turns to the fact of the solar eclipse, this year, a the solution for this" question. It may bo that from some remarkable cause not yet fully explained or understood, and connected with relative positions about being aaumed by celestsal bodies, the unusual prevalence of storms and unwonted meteorological manifestations, are ex.

N. Converse returned from the East last Saturday evening, and has since been devoting himself to matters connected with the Midland Pacific. While absent, he closed a contract for the building of all tne bridges for the first ten miles of road, to bo completed within the mouth of August, and all the necessary timber has already been purchased. But ono link remains unfilled for the transportation of iron from the seaboard to this city, acd that the Dr. expects to supply within a few days.

The track layer will be here within two or three days, to ece just what he needs to do his work, when he will at once prepare for operations. Owing to the late heavy rains the engineers have been unable to complete their profiles at the time exr pected, and the time for receiving bids for the grading west to Lincoln, has been extended to Friday of this week, when it is expected the con-tracts will be closed. When this is done, Dr. Converse will go East to see in person to the pushing forward of the iron, which will be laid down as fast as men and money can effect such a work. The first of September will find ten miles of the Midland Pacific weather permitting all bridged and graded complete, ready for the iron.

Dr. Hess, assisted by Dr. Thomas and Dr. Kerr, performed a most difficult surgical operation yesterday at the Barnum House. The case was that of H.

The disease was not thoroughly removed, however, and the third time he came to Dr. Hessi lie had to take the arm off at the shoulder joint, and finding this not samcient to remove the diseased I part he took away also a portion of tho shoulder blade.

We have just received a copr of a curious and interesting bouk late ly issued by the "National publish ing entitled "Life of Jefferson Davis, with a Secret History of the Southern Confederacy, Gathered Behind the Scenes in Eichmond," by Kd ward A. Pollard, author of "Lost Cause," Mr.

PoPard, from his position at the jConfederste Capital, as an an thor and journalist, seems to Jiare had an excellent opportunity to ob serve the inner workings of that curious concern, the of Robcldom, and has improved it by giving tis a book will be ex lensively read.
