AT RUPPERT'S i 'i REXALL PHARMACY 1 tract is obviously three no trump, in which nine immediate tricks are available. But with a 5-3 spade fit, it seemed natural to play in spades. North had a choice of responses to one spade, and a final contract of three no trump would have been fairly easy to reach if the first response had been one no trump. South would have raised to two no trump, and North would have continued to game. After the actual raise to two spades, South's direct jump to game was slightly optimistic.

Two no trump would have been a good bid, and North would have raised to three no trump. Exploring bids such as three clubs and three diamonds also come into consideration! Against four spades, West led the elub king and declarer saw that he was in danger of losing two club tricks and two diamond tricks. He made the normal play of ducking the first trick, although it was not essential in this case. The club continuation was won with the ace and "thespade lung lihd queen were cashed. The heart ace and king were cashed and a heart was ruffed.

This prepared the endplay, and declarer led the club ten. West won and was forced to make a helpful lead. Any lead but a diamond would have conceded a ruff and sluff, so West led a diamond. In this way South lost only one diamond trick. Note that declarer was slightly lucky in that West did not hold the missing trump, which he would have been able to lead safely.
