Judds shine in their second State Fair show By L. Two years first Nebraska and put on show. Saturday er-daughter Kent Wolgamott ago, the Judds made their State Fair appearance a solid, if unspectacular night, the country mothteam returned to the Bob Devaney Sports Center and demonstrated that they have taken their award-winning act a notch higher. 098521 Review From the -stage opening of their new single "Born To Be Blue" to the final rattle of Little Richard's "Rip It Up," the Judds' 75-minute show was honest, sincere and entertaining. Musically, the star of the show, as always, is daughter Wynonna.

Blessed with one of the great voices in any kind of music, Wynonna, 26, is a rock 'n' soul singer at heart and brings gravelly power to the Judds' country. Their sound has more than a little bit of rockabilly built in to keep things lively, although some arrangements take the edge off the songs. Mother Naomi, 44, who has written several of the duo's hits, is primarily a background singer. But she also fronts the group in working the crowd, making comments and telling jokes from the June Carter school of country entertainment. Among the highlights of a superbly paced and lit show were the gentle beat and Naomi's swooping harmony on "Rockin' With The Rhythm;" Wynonna's heartfelt telling of the love story in "Young Love;" and a beautiful two-song ode to past generations, the touching acoustic "Guardian about Naomi's great grandparents and their smash, "Grandpa." Through the show, Wynonna was in fine voice, singing some serious blues on "Rompin' Stompin' Blues" from their soon-to-be released eighth album, growling on "Give A Little Love" and blasting out on the 50s rock closer which was enough to make one wonder how great she could be fronting a tough little rock 'n' roll band.

With Naomi's crowd-pleasing efforts and the duo's genuine affection for the audience, Saturday night's show easily demonstrated that the Judds are among country's best performers. Opening act T.G. Sheppard was making his fourth fair appearance and was the only repeat act the 1989 lineup. His show this year was more confident and relaxed than last year's effort and was a definite crowd pleaser. A practiced showman, Sheppard waded deep into the crowd during a medley of his number one hits, kissing the girls (of all ages) and making them cry.

His smooth 45-minute set showcased his warm baritone and his lovin' and leavin' country pop hits and, as with the Judds, was a performance in which both the star and the audience displayed plenty of affection for one another." Two men, boy die in separate accidents Traffic Fatalities 1990 1989 Nebraska 177 202 Lancaster 10 21 Lincoln By Staff Writers and News Services Three people died in separate weekend traffic accidents on Nebraska roads. Donald Penne, 44, of Laurel died in a two-car accident on a county road miles southeast of Laurel, a dispatcher at the Norfolk office of the Nebraska State Patrol said.

Penne died of injuries suffered when his Chevrolet El Camino collided nearly head-on on with a trailer driven by Robert Dahlquist; the dispatcher said. Penne was taken to a Sioux City, Iowa, hospital and later pronounced dead. Dahlquist, 30, also of Laurel, was treated for minor injuries at a Wayne hospital and released, the dispatcher said. The 9:45 a.m. accident was attributed to poor visibility because of fog, she said.

On Friday, Chase Gardels, 8, of Wilcox was on a bicycle on a paved county road east of town when he collided with a car at about 2:30 p.m., said Beckey Rabe, a Kearney County sheriff's dispatcher. No other details were released. In Omaha, a car flew over the median of a city street Saturday and landed on top of the front of a car in which Danny Lee, 48, of LaVista was a passenger, Police Officer Jay Urban said. Soviet killer, rapist identified by victim States about eight months ago and lived in Los McDonald said. Cheryln Wahlgren, who called the sheriff's office, said Oates "was real tired. He acted like he was tired of running." Wahlgren told KRVN radio in Lexing. ton that she and her husband, their daughter, 11, and their hired hand were sitting on the patio when a man started walking up their lane. Wahlgren said her husband told her and their daughter to go upstairs and call the sheriff while he grabbed a shotgun and met the man at the door.

The man said he had car trouble on the Interstate and would like a taxi back to his car, Wahlgren said. "He also asked for a drink." She said her husband told him the sheriff had been called and could help the man when he arrived. "By the time he got to the end of the lane the sheriff's car came and stopped him," Wahlgren said. Wahlgren said the man was living in an attic of a vacant farmhouse on her land that authorities had checked Friday. McDonald said clothing worn in the Thursday robberies was found in the attic.

Alcohol warnings OK but ad ban preferred WASHINGTON (AP) United Methodist officials voiced support for proposed federal legislation requiring health and safety warnings on all alcohol advertising but said they would prefer a ban on such ads. The Rev. Thom White Wolf Fassett, head of the denomination's social concerns agency, told a House committee: "We support the elimination of beer commercials from television screens and broadcast airwaves, and removal of liquor, beer and wine advertisements from newspapers and magazines." Deputy Police Chief Maj. Gen.

A. Bugayev told the Soviet evening television news program "Vremya" Friday that the man was captured after being identified by a woman who survived an attack. Bugayev refused to identify the suspect but said he had a long criminal record, including six previous convictions, and lived in Moscow after being recently released from prison. The Moscow City Council had offered a reward of 10,000 rubles about $16,000 for help in apprehending the man who stalked the Timiryazevsky district of northern Moscow since July 13, the newspaper Moskovskaya Pravda reported.
