Council Bluffs man wins $4 million lottery jackpot DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) A Council Bluffs man won Iowa's $4 million lottery jackpot Thursday, the first person to win the jackpot since the game started almost three months ago. Bill Watson, 29, who has worked for the Omaha, fire department since 1981, said his heart "skipped a beat" when he opened a black plastic canister containing a yellow ticket reading "jackpot." Out of nervousness, Watson then dropped the canister on the live television show. "I hope it doesn't bounce," said a grinning Watson when Lottery Commissioner Ed Stanek presented him a giantsized check for $4,001,000.

"I retire as of tonight," said Watson, the last candidate selected to participate in Thursday night's game. Watson, who said he was taking three friends to Hawaii, almost didn't make it to the show because his car containing all his possessions was towed from an illegal parking space. Luckily, he had his firefighters identification card on him, which gained him entrance to the studios. "I'm going to pay off some stuff and then take care of my parents and pay off their stuff," said Watson, who said he was going to invest at least some of it in real estate. "They took care of me so now I can take care of Watson said he has spent a total of about $200 on lottery tickets since the game began in Iowa almost three months ago.

"I'll probably still keep playing," he said. His future plans, he said, was "to stay warm in the winter." Some of Watson's friends were in the studios and described him as an avid motocross motorcycle racer who broke his neck twice in 1975. "On the way over we just talked like it wasn't going to happen," said Craig Hancock. "But he said if we won we'd go to Hawaii. We're definitely going." Stanek, who said he was "really happy" to finally have a jackpot winner, presented Watson with a $150,037.50 check, which is what he'll be given every year for the next 20 years after about $50,000 is deducted in state and federal taxes from each payment.

There were eight other lottery participants Thursday, with four of them winning $25,000. They included Marvin Pals of Sheffield, Peggy Faust of Des Moines, Patricia Cox of Des Moines and Loretta Quintana of Atlantic. Morgan Phillipp of Cedar Rapids won $10,000, while Phillip Tyrell of North English and Larry Brown of Cedar Rapids each won $5,000. Robert Mayberry of Glenwood won $1,000. Elevator owner posts bond on theft by deception charges From The Associated Press The owner of a bankrupt Nebraska grain company was freed after posting a $10,000 bond in Butler County Court, authorities said.

Robert Ladehoff, owner of Ladehoff Grain Co. in Linwood, is charged with two counts of theft by deception. Ladehoff's business was closed Oct. 7 by the Nebraska Public Service Commission because he was unable to obtain a legally required bond to operate his elevator. Ladehoff allegedly failed to keep a pledge to pay Commodity Credit Corp.

liens against corn he bought from two Linwood residents last summer. The unpaid liens total about $27,000, authorities said. A preliminary hearing on the charges against Ladehoff was set for Jan. 16 in Butler County Court. Earlier Thursday, Ladehoff appeared in U.S.

Bankruptcy Court in Omaha. During a session, several of Ladehoff's 86 creditors asked questions about his financial status and debts, said Shirley Newton, deputy clerk for the bankruptcy court. Ladehoff has about $1 million in secured debts and $456,718 in unsecured debts, Newton said. His assets total about $1,377,000, she said. Newton said it is now up to trustee Merle Nicola to determine Ladehoff's disposable assets and, how they should be distributed to creditors.

Ladehoff's attorney, William Line of Fremont, said it will probably take about six months to liquidate his client's assets. Line said Ladehoff is currently working as a paint salesman in his brother's business in Glendale, Ariz. Line filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy proceedings for Ladehoff on Oct. 15. Historical Society to charge admission at branch museums OMAHA (AP) Beginning Dec.

1, admission will be charged at branch museums of the Nebraska State Historical Society, Director James Hanson said. Society officials expect the admission fees to generate at least $30,000 over the next 12 months, Hanson said. The money will help make up for budget cuts ordered by Gov. Bob Kerrey. Members of the society and school groups won't be charged admission.

Special discount rates will be given to groups of 20 or more. People 18 and older will be charged $1, Children accompanied by their parents will be admitted free; without their parents, children will be charged 25 cents. Museums that will charge admission include: Meriwether Lewis at Brownville, Willa Cather at Red Cloud, John G. Neihardt at Bancroft, the Kennard and Ferguson houses in Lincoln, Neligh Mills at Neligh, Fort Robinson near Crawford, and Norris House in McCook. No admission will be charged at the State Museum in Lincoln because it's the site for scholarly research, exhibits and other activities, Hanson said.

"We may have to think in the future of putting in a charge" at the State Museum, he said. No charge will be made at the Chimney Rock Museum because it has minimal expenses and is only open three months a year. "From what I know of tourism in Nebraska, there won't be a decline" because of the admission charges, Hanson said. In most other states, visitors pay to enter branch museums, he said. Man gets 3 years in prison for bilking parents of missing child Johnny Gosch DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) The man accused of cheating the parents of missing paperboy Johnny Gosch out of $11,000 was sentenced Thursday to three years in federal prison. U.S. District Judge Harold Vietor also ordered Robert Meier II to five years probation after he serves the prison term. As part of a plea bargain, Meier pleaded guilty last month to two counts of wire fraud after he defrauded John and Noreen Gosch.

The 19-year-old Meier, from Saginaw, was indicted on six counts of wire fraud on Aug. 22 after he met with the Gosches and told them he could rescue their missing son from Mexico, where Meier said the boy was being held as a slave. The Gosches have said they believed Meier's story because he knew information about their son that had not been publicly released. Johnny Gosch was 12 years old when he disappeared the morning of Sept. 5, 1982, as he was about to begin his West Des Moines newspaper route.
