Maseman on For an accountant, the CFO is pretty unbuttoned, says United Way resource director Rick Inbody. "I'd say she's a relative free-spirit in a pretty restrained environment." One year, someone brought some gounnet dog biscuits to the office and Rick dared Marjo to eat one. She did. "He paid me $5 and it went into the campaign fund," she says. In fact, she'd do almost anything to help raise money for the 80 programs in the 39 agencies United Way helps fund.

"She's so passionate about what we do she just wanted to make a statement," Rick says. And next year? How do you top a knows, says Rick. "I'd hate to guess what she'll do." And since September, Marjo had kept telling Kim Robak- this year's campaign chair that if the campaign raised $5 million, she'd get a tattoo. (I'd heard of corporate branding, but Marjo first made the challenge in 1 999 and again in 2000 but the economy went south and fundraisers could never quite hit the mark. Then last Thursday at the United Way banquet the day the campaign officially announced a record $5,001,923 in donations Marjo took Kim aside. "I did it," she told her. Then she pulled up her left sleeve to prove it.

"I have to tell you," Kim said Sunday. "I really didn't expect her to." And so big. "Twice the size 1 thought it'd be." She wasn't the only person to get wide-eyed. mittal service. Butherus, Maserl Love Funeral Home, 4040 A St.

(Disclosure: I donate to United Way. I serve on one of its volunteer committees. I think they do great work.) Marjo believes in the United Way so much that every fall when it kicks off its annual fund-raising campaign, she makes a challenge to the volunteer chairperson. One year, she vowed to dye her hair purple if the campaign made its goal. The money came in and Marjo came to work looking like a grape snow cone.

The next year, she challenged the new chair. Make goal and I'll dye my hair (lie colors of the rainlxnu The money came in. Marjo showed up at work look 1 Fl? at Marjo's boss Sandy Rupp had worried other employees might feel compelled to compete. Let's see, Marjo has a tattoo, what sacrifices can you make for the company this year? Other people just thought it was a joke. "It washes off, right?" they'd ask when they saw the logo on her arm.

Well, no. Unlike the purple hair, the tattoo isn't going to rinse off after 20 showers. It's for life. Psst. Marjo.

Jobs don't last forever. Wlio knows, next year maybe you'll be working for Goodyear or doing the books for the Saltdogs. Now there's some tattoo possibilities. She's thought about that, Marjo says. "Even if I was to leave, I would still believe in the cause." People who really know her weren't surprised by the body art, she says.
